The Gallatin Fire Department has acquired a new piece of equipment that will aid in underwater rescues. The handheld sonar system – AquaEye PRO – allows rescuers to more clearly see to the bottom of rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water more quickly than relying on divers. Sonar signal from the device searchers about a football field of water in a few minutes, allowing rescue teams to more easily pinpoint areas of interest. The Gallatin Swiftwater Rescue Team plans to employ the device during flash flooding events as well as aid in rescues at local recreation spots.
