TVA records several power demand records in September 2026

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has reported it set multiple high power records in September due to unseasonably high temperatures across the region. TVA said the powerful heat dome sent temperatures above 100 degrees, leading to homes, businesses, and industries consuming significantly more energy than usual to stay cool and operate. TVA delivered more than 30,000 megawatts of electricity. Previously, the only September day in TVA history that had reached more than 30,000 megawatts was Sept. 24, 2007. Additionally, TVA set 12 all-time power demand peaks for any fall or spring month, including a record 33,270 megawatts delivered on Sept. 3, 2026 – also the highest demand day of 2026 so far. TVA reports that the region may need between 11 to 32 gigawatts of additional generation capacity through 2040.
