James Gafford
James Gafford, former chief of the La Vergne Rescue Department, died Nov. 23, 2025 at the age of 86. A native of Ashland City, Gafford had a 63-year career in the fire service in both South Nashville and La Verge. He served as La Vergne’s fire chief for more than 40 years and worked with the department from 1951 until his retirement in 2014. During his tenure, La Vergne incorporated as a city, and he helped shape fire protection in the city’s early days. He has been remembered as a mentor for numerous firefighters and his work helping establish volunteer departments throughout Rutherford County.
