BWXT officials announced the signing of an agreement that supports expansion of BWXT’s facility in Jonesborough, creating 181 new jobs to more than double the company’s local workforce. The company will also invest $714.5 million to produce High Purity Depleted Uranium (HPDU) metal for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration. In September 2025, NNSA awarded BWXT a 10-year contract valued at $1.6 billion to build an HPDU manufacturing plant at its Jonesborough site. Once completed, BWXT’s Jonesborough facility will be the only active site capable of performing this critical process for the government. The project is supported by an economic development grant from TNECD and is the third project the company has announced in Tennessee with other locations in Oak Ridge(opens in a new tab) and Erwin(opens in a new tab). This also marks the 12th project to utilize funding from the state’s Nuclear Energy Fund(opens in a new tab).
