Tennessee unemployment rate holds steady in January 2023

Tennessee’s January unemployment rate remained unchanged from the previous three months at 3.5%, according to new data from the Department of Labor and Workforce Development (TDLWD). The state had also recorded the same unemployment rate the previous year in January 2022. During the month, the state’s workforce increased by 21,800 jobs with the professional and business services sector leading job growth followed by leisure and hospitality and finally the mining, logging, and construction sector. Tennessee employers have added a total of 123,200 jobs in the 12-month period ending in January 2023. Across the nation, unemployment in January dropped by 0.1 of a percentage point to 3.4%. One year ago, the rate for the United States came in at 4%.
