Tennessee falls in annual state rankings of child wellbeing

Tennessee fell in annual rankings for education, economic-wellbeing and over-all wellbeing for children in 2025. The Annie E. Casey Foundation released its study ranking states on a variety of child wellbeing measures. Tennessee ranked 37 in overall wellbeing and 42 in economic wellbeing. While Tennessee had the second greatest improvement on education year-over-year, the state still ranked 18 out of 50. The state retained its rank of 39 in child health and improved its family and community ranking to 42. Reasons contributing to the state’s ranking included a low number of preschool age children enrolled in school, fourth grade reading proficiency, the amount of high school students graduating on time, the number of children whose families are housing cost burdened, children without health insurance, and the child and teen death rate.
